music video introduction

 1) What is the purpose of a music video?

to promote things, the most blatant example being the song used in the video.

2) How has the digital age changed the production and distribution of music videos?

It indicated that songs and music videos were more widely accessible at all times. The ability to submit videos to video hosting websites like Youtube and view them on mobile phones and other portable media devices allowed viewers to view the video and hear the song whenever and wherever they pleased.

3) Which three major record labels are behind VEVO? What is VEVO and why was it created?

Abu Dhabi Media, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment. A website dedicated to hosting music videos is called Vevo. In the UK, Vevo's content is syndicated to Youtube, where Google and Youtube profit from advertising by sending people to the official music videos rather than those posted by a third party.

4) What are the key conventions of a music video?

Lip-syncing, a story, a band or musician, and intertextuality.

5) How can narrative be used in music video? Give an example of a music video that uses a narrative.

The plot may be connected to the song's lyrics and serve to illustrate what is being expressed, or it may stand alone and tell a new tale. I Was a Teenage Anarchist, as an example.

6) What examples are provided in the factsheet for intertextuality in music videos?

that the Back Street Boys and Christina Aguilera videos are mentioned in the Blink 182 song "All the Small Things" By copying scenes.

7) Why do audiences enjoy intertextual references in media products?

mostly because it makes the audience happy when they get the reference.

8) Read the music video example analysis on page 3 of the factsheet. Select a music video of your own choice for each of the following headings and explain how each one links to the heading:

  • Conventions (movement/narrative/artist)
  • Intertextuality
  • Representation
  • Audience

The music video is mentioned in the first Aladdin movie. The scene depicts the genie and the main character in the genie's imagination, where the genie's magical abilities create vibrant scenery, creatures, people, etc. that are reminiscent of a circus. The choreography and dancing in the music video are linked to movement in music videos. Due to his attire, the main character (Aladdin) is portrayed as a man from ancient Egypt. Due to the intertextuality of this song, which appears in the classic Aladdin films, certain fans may experience nostalgia when listening to it. Since the first Aladdin movie was produced in 1992, the target audience might either be children, teenagers, or families.

9) Watch the video for Ice Cube's It Was A Good Day (1993). How did this video set the conventions for later hip-hop music videos?

Nowadays, hip-hop music videos frequently feature outfits that are current. Additionally, like in Ice Cube's music video, contemporary music videos frequently have cuts between the singer lip-syncing to the song and cuts to the song's story.

10) How important do you think music videos are in the marketing and promotion of music artists today? Are music videos still essential to a band or artist's success? You need to form your own opinion here.

Because people don't watch music videos as frequently as they once did and prefer to listen to songs they appreciate more than those that are well-produced or feature intertextuality, I don't believe music videos are all that helpful in promoting music artists.
