statement of intent final draft

My crime drama:

Title: King of the 6

Tagline: Kill or be killed

Genre: Crime Drama

Concept/media language:

This extract will be about a son who is a drug dealer due to his life experiences. He has grown up without a dad and his mother is a drug addict who uses quite frequently so his life isn't easy. The mum attempts to buy off her son when he doesn't agree and refuses to sell to her. He then leaves and we see someone follow him but we are not sure of who and we are not shown either. Towards the end, the stalker who had followed him ends up strangling him and we are then revealed who the killer and stalker are and to our surprise, it's his mother.

Locations:

Ravenor Park which is where Idris deals

My house which is where his mum lives and it's where they have their disagreement

Shots:

Close up when they exchange substances

Establishing shot of the first setting

Shot reverse shot on the conversations

Use of enigma codes (Barthes) towards the end as we don't know who is following Idris

Sound:

Diegetic sound - dialogue excerpts to communicate narrative and ambient sound - e.g.: a phone call to show that his shot is on the way.

Non-diegetic sound - "hide and seek" when the shot and Idris walk away from each other to communicate the aspects of the narrative.

Audience:

My extract will be aimed at older youth and adults with an age rating of 12 with an audience appeal for all genders but may appeal mostly towards males due to a more male-dominated cast and also due to the aspects of the narrative. The show will borrow conventions from other shows like "Top Boy" and "Power" as they perfectly align with my narrative idea. My crime drama will reinforce stereotypes as the son will be the drug dealer. However, it also subverts stereotypes because mothers are supposed to care for and nurture their kids whereas, in my extract, Idris' mother kills him over drugs. People may argue that it is not part of their culture to sell drugs so you could apply Gilroy's theory to my extract. Gilroy believed that culture was too frequently used to explain divisions and differences between groups of people rather than uniting them through shared interests. The men will behave like men, but occasionally the women may exhibit somewhat masculine behaviour. Butler's assertion that "no one is a gender from the start"—that gender is performative and constructed—is further supported and highlighted by this.

Representation:

Since young people often want to relate to and incorporate what they see in the media into their own lives, which isn't always a good idea, you could also apply the media effects hypothesis to my criminal drama television series. Media effects are commonly characterised as social or psychological reactions in individuals, pairs, small groups, establishments, or societies due to exposure to, interpretation of, or engagement with media content.

Media Industries and Digital Convergence:

The show will be streamed on Netflix as this platform is known globally and so there is a wider audience market. Netflix is also a very popular platform so a lot of people will be able to access my crime drama. There will also be posters and online adverts to increase awareness. There will be adverts on social media for people to comment below and share the release. There will also be interviews after the release of the show so that everything is explained and so people know the background behind the content. This show will also be promoted on Instagram and TikTok as they are the most used platforms by the younger demographic.

Crime drama magazine:

Magazine title: Elite

Slogan: Expect the unexpected

My print coursework will contain a cover page of the protagonist as well as 2 smaller images of the other characters. I will be conducting 2 interviews, one with the protagonist and one with his mother so that we can get both sides from 2 different perspectives. I will use a variety of pictures and will keep the same font throughout the inside pages so that it's a clear house style throughout.
