Paper 2 mock exam learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

WWW: Both texts covered and basic points made.

EBI: Needs much more development and detail, including theory and audience/industry reference.

2) Did you succeed in meeting or exceeding your target grade for A Level Media in this paper? If not, how many additional marks do you need to achieve your target grade in Paper 2?

No i'm quite far off my target grade. I need 22 more marks for my target grade.

3) Write a question-by-question analysis of your performance. For each question, write how many marks you got from the number available and identify any points that you missed by carefully studying the AQA indicative content in the mark scheme:

Q1: 0/9

• the skyline of contemporary/futuristic skyscrapers are signifiers of the city, banking/finance etc; this is reinforced by the costumes which suggest white-collar professionals

• the positioning of character and mode of address can be interpreted as signifiers of race and gender (the dominant white male, evasive black male, diminished female)

Q2: 8/25

• the understanding of online media as creating a more active role for audiences – particularly in contrast to traditional, passive media forms

• that online technology provides easily accessible tools for production and action

• in addition, some answers may question ‘end of audience’ theories’ positive view – particularly in Shirky’s work – of the time people spend online

Q3: 0/25

• It is a co-production of AMC Networks, SundanceTV (US) and RTL Television (Germany), positioning it to exploit the national and global market – characteristic of a trend arguably shaped by economic and cultural contexts.

• Distributed by Fremantle, a British production and distribution company, subsidiary of RTL media, a global company which is designed to target an international audience – characteristic of media companies’ responses to economic contexts.

• As a BBC ‘state of the nation’ series, commissioned for Sunday prime time slot, Capital may suggest that there have been limited changes to distribution and consumption.

• One of the key selling points of the series is its representation of cultural (and social, political) contexts.

Q4: 10/25

• How the different modes and language associated with different media forms communicate multiple meanings.

• How processes of production, distribution and circulation shape media products.

• The effect of individual producers on media industries.

• The significance of patterns of ownership and control, including conglomerate ownership, vertical integration and diversification.

4) Look at question 4 - the synoptic question. How many of the four key concepts did you cover in your answer? Write a new essay plan for this question using the indicative content in the mark scheme and taking care to include at least three of Language - Representations - Audience - Industries. You can use bullet points but make sure you offer enough content to meet the criteria for Level 5 (top level). This will be somewhere between 3-4 well-developed paragraphs planned in some detail.

  • Much of Sims freeplay reinforces stereotypical gender roles as van Zoonen and Butler state. This can be seen in customisation options when creating a Sim and also in expansion pack trailers such as Teens, pregnancy and The Mall.
  • It could be argued that fixed gender roles and ingrained inequality are part of western capitalist ideologies reinforced by the game.
  • Driven by a strong, independent female protagonist in Aloy, HFW has been held up as an example of how gender in videogames is changing. This challenges gender inequalities and reflects cultural change.
  • Game created by Guerrilla Games in Amsterdam, a company that prides itself on its diverse workforce and challenging gender inequalities in the industry.

5) Based on the whole of your Paper 2 learner response, plan FIVE topics / concepts / CSPs / theories that you will prioritise in your Easter Media revision timetable.

  • Answering the question in detail.
  • revise theories.
  • revise key terms.
  • revise CSP's.
  • link back to question.
