Print brief research and planning

 Front cover:

1) Research TV listing magazine front cover key conventions. Find at least five examples of TV listings magazine front covers and post them to your blog. This will give you a good idea of the type of magazine you need to produce.

2) Note down the design elements you notice in each front cover example you research and look for aspects you can use in your own work (e.g. camera shots, page design or cover lines).

  • Range of pictures and colours.
  • Font designs and effects.
  • Multiple pictures.
  • Slogan.
  • Name of magazine.
  • Rhetorical questions.
  • Quotes.
  • Main person is always the biggest on the front cover.

3) What key conventions can you find across different types of front cover - e.g. title placement, cover lines, main flash or cover line, date/price/barcode etc.

  • Title is sometimes faded behind protagonist head.
  • Not all magazine covers have bar codes on the front however some of them are either at the bottom or on the side.
  • Date on the top right corner.
  • Brand's achievement e.g. world's most trusted film reviews.
  • Some are covered in many words however some are just a picture or pictures with the heading and a few words.

Inside page feature:

1) Now research inside page features from TV listings magazines. Post at least five images of magazine inside page features (they can be from different magazine genres if you are struggling to find TV listings magazine inside pages).

2) Note down the design elements you notice in each inside page feature example you research and look for aspects you can use in your own work (e.g. use of main/secondary images, page design, pull quotes, picture captions etc.)

  • Massive pictures on some pages.
  • Different size font.
  • Multiple pictures on 1 page.
  • Paragraphs.
  • Colour coordination.
  • Quotes.
3) What key conventions can you find across different types of inside page feature - e.g. headline, subheading, main image etc.

  • Main image could be on a page alone.
  • Multiple images on a page.
  • Image could be a background behind text.
  • Text could also cover image.
  • Main heading on the side of the page or at the top in a big bold font.

Planning and sketching:

1) Plan the content and cover lines for your front cover:
  • Title (must be NEW original TV listings magazine you have invented): Elite
  • Slogan: Kill or be killed
  • Cover image: My cousin (protagonist, drug dealer)
  • Main cover story/main flash: Expect the unexpected
  • Additional cover lines: When desperation makes you go to the most extreme lengths
  • Additional two smaller images: Mother, Shot
  • Font style / colour scheme, additional design aspects: Blue, silver, white colour scheme. Maybe a faded coloured background.

2) Plan the images you will use for the front cover - use CLAMPS. One main image and two smaller images required to meet the minimum content in the brief.

main image: Idris (my cousin)
C: Tracksuit.
L: Low key lighting to portray the fact that he is a drug dealer which isn't good.
A: My cousin who is playing Idris (Drug dealer).
M: No make up needed.
P: Side bag, Iphone.
S: House or outside.

Smaller image: Mother
C: Casual clothing.
L: Low key lighting as she is a drug user so it conveys her dark thoughts and situations.
A: My friend who is playing the mother.
M: Some make up to make her look pale.
P: No props.
S: House.

Smaller image 2: Shot
C: Tracksuit.
L: Low key lighting to portray what he is doing isn't good.
A: My friend who is playing the shot.
M: No make up needed.
P: Face mask
S: Outside somewhere

3) Plan the content for your inside page feature:
  • Subject of feature: Interview with the protagonist (Idris)
  • Headline: Inside knowledge
  • Subheading: How relatable is King of the 6?
  • Main image: Idris
  • Smaller images (need minimum of four across the three pages): crime scene tape, mother, drug packet, mother and son together maybe.
  • Font style / colour scheme, additional design aspects: Grey with white text.

4) Write the copy (words) you will use for the inside page feature - headline, subheading, article text.

Headline: Inside knowledge.
Subheading: How relatable is King of the 6?
article text: Interview between Idris and Mother but 2 different interviews.

Interview with Idris:

Interviewer: "Idris, your character tragically died at the hands of his own mother in the most recent episode of King of the 6. What was your reaction to playing such a surprising turn of events? Idris: "It was undoubtedly a difficult experience. It's always your goal as an actor to authentically convey the path of your character, and this plot forced me to tackle some really difficult and unpleasant emotions. A mother and her son's relationship is already complex, but when violence and treachery are added, it becomes even more intense."

Interviewer: "Did you have any reservations about taking on this role or scene?"

Idris: "Absolutely. When I first read the script, I had to take a moment to digest it. It's not every day you come across a story line like this. But ultimately, I saw it as an opportunity to delve into the depths of human psychology and relationships, albeit in a very twisted way."

Interviewer: "How did you prepare yourself mentally for such an intense scene?"

Idris: "I talked with the director and authors about the character's motivations and spent a lot of time studying the psychology of parental filicide. Furthermore, in order to establish a secure atmosphere on set where we could completely immerse ourselves in the scene's emotional intensity, I mostly depended on the assistance of my co-stars and the production crew." Interviewer: "Idris, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. It's evident that this plot has taken you and your character on a meaningful journey."

Interview with mother:

Interviewer: "Your character took a drastic turn in the most recent episode of King of the 6, killing her own son because he refused to give her drugs." How did you handle a story line this terrifying?" Mother: "It was a really difficult duty to assume. It's always your goal as an actor to go into the depths of human emotion and behaviour, even if it makes you uncomfortable or uneasy. I had to explore the mind of a lady whose addiction and desperation engulfed her for this plot."

Interviewer: "Did you find it difficult to empathise with your character's motivations?"

Mother: "You know, totally. I had a hard time at first comprehending how someone could do something so horrible, especially to their own child. However, after doing some study and speaking with the show's creators, I realised that her acts were motivated by terrible desperation."

Interviewer: "How did you prepare yourself emotionally for the intense scenes, particularly the moment of violence?"

Mother: "To put it mildly, it was emotionally draining. I gave serious thought to the anecdotes from real life about addiction and the terrible effects it can have on families. I relied on the director's and my fellow cast members' support while we were filming to get through those difficult and intense scenes." Interviewer: "I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. It is evident that this plot has offered a compelling examination of the intricacies of addiction and its consequences on both individuals and families."

5) Plan the social media content you will include in your print work to create opportunities for digital convergence e.g. hashtags, social media details etc.

#Expecttheunexpected
#Betrayal
#drugsaren'ttheway
#Crazy

6) Research and select the font or typography you will use for your print work. This is a critical element of your print work - the brief requires a consistent house style running through all of your pages.

I think I am going to use municipal font as it is a solid and powerful retro font that makes a statement.

7) Produce an A4 sketch of your front cover design and scan it/upload a picture to your blog.

8) Produce A4 sketches of your inside page feature with clear layout of where headline, subheading, images and text will appear on the pages.

9) Create a new A4 portrait document in Adobe Photoshop (or Adobe InDesign) for your front cover design. Start to add text, check your font choices and put in the elements you have already planned/sketched.

New A4 project opened however not edited as of right now.

10) Create an A3 landscape document plus an A4 portrait document in Adobe Photoshop (or Adobe InDesign) for your inside page feature. Add the elements you can - headline, subheading, text etc.

Both projects created however also not edited as of right now.

Photoshoot:

1) Who do you need to photograph for your front cover and inside page images? Remember, you need seven original images across the whole print production.

There's going to be pictures of both the mother and son throughout the magazine as well as a  picture of the murder weapon (rope) and a picture of crime scene tape.

2) What camera shots do you need? Write a shot list for your photoshoots. Make sure you plan a variety of camera shots you will look to capture - medium shots, close-ups etc.

Shot No.

3) Plan the mise-en-scene. What costumeprops or make-up will you require for your photoshoots?

Costume: Tracksuit, casual clothing, face mask, puffer jacket.
Props: Rope, drugs, police tape, phone.
Make-up: No make-up needed.

4) Finally, note down the time and date for your photoshoots. This may be inside or outside school (or a combination of both). You will have Media lesson time for this after the mock exams.

During the half term. Outside of school.

Statement of Intent:

1) Once you have completed your print research and planning, go back to your statement of intent and make sure you have included the print brief in your final draft. Then, submit the final draft statement of intent to your teacher.
